Life Lately | Serving In Delta State | First Clearance Of 2020 | Do’s and Do Not’s For Corp Members On Clearance Day

By Nneka Olisa - January 09, 2020

It is yet another month which always comes with Nysc clearance (You need to be cleared monthly in order for the Federal Government’s 19800 to be paid). The clearance is usually conducted by the Local Government Inspector (LGI) who maps out dates for clearance and Corp members need to show up at the stipulated dates.

Well, January’s clearance was no ordinary clearance as it’s the first in the year 2020 and yours truly was already counting down to POP (Passing Out Parade).

Most Corp members dreaded going back to their respective PPAs’ and I was not far from the queue if not the first in line. The clearance was scheduled for 6th of January and the Sunday before then, I had packed my bags to vacate my house. It took all the courage I could muster not to stay back and leave the next morning being Monday. My mom was already giving me reasons why I shouldn’t leave that Sunday. Also, my younger brother became all moody.
I didn’t want to be caught up with the whole early morning travel because if I was to leave on Monday, I needed to leave as early as 6am in order for me to meet up with clearance. So I stood my ground and refused all tempting ideas coming from my family.

Thankfully, I managed to arrive at the park on time for me to board a vehicle down to Agbor, Delta State. Unfortunately for the passengers in the vehicle, we didn’t arrive at our destination in the vehicle we boarded from the park https://www.linkedin.com/in/rtc-nigeria-43253367 as it broke down just after the Onitsha-Asaba bridge. The driver of the vehicle literally waisted our time. After much waiting the passengers decided to board another vehicle.

Arriving at my destination by 6pm I was so exhausted from the trip meanwhile, my stomach was singing the worst melody. Mustering up strength, I cleaned up my space.

The next day being Monday, some of us who didn’t plunge in to the desire of spending one night at the comfort of family got dressed, goofed around with dozens of pictures and headed to our PPA for our clearance forms.

DO’s and DO NOT’s FOR CORP MEMBERS ON CLEARANCE DAY

Like every other person in authority, your Local government inspector might decide to exhibit superiority on the day of clearance. So here are tips to follow not to fall into the trap of being called a “scapegoat.”

Don’t ever forget your clearance form. My LGI is quite strict or bias because I sense that in him and wouldn’t allow a Corp member to thumb print without possessing a clearance letter stamped and signed from their PPA.

Dress properly. By properly I mean in your full Nysc regalia (Khaki trouser, white canvas or jungle boots and a White-round necked top).

No hair accessory like scarf or cap. Instead opt for the Nysc cap.

Be ready to exercise patience because some of the Local government offices barely have steady light and sometimes it’s on the day of clearance that the generator would be serviced. Most days you’d have to wait for your LGI to make an appearance-mine usually shows up by 11am or later. One time, I think clearance started by 1pm.

So if you’re going for clearance, go with enough patience stuffed into khaki pockets.
